U.S. pet ownership on the decline
Dog ownership down a little between 2006 and 2011, cat ownership down more, according to AVMA’s ﬁve-year demographic study.

san diego—The percentage of petowning households declined 2.4 percent over the last five years, according to a study of 50,000 pet owners conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). An August preview of the 2012 U.S.
Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, to be released this fall, revealed that the percentage of households owning dogs decreased 1.9 percent, while households owning cats declined 6.2 percent, although cats still outnumber dogs as pets. Changes in the total number of dogs and cats owned as pets are
even more dramatic. According to the study, there were 69.9 million pet dogs at the end of 2011, a decrease of 3 percent from 72.1 million in 2006, and 74.4 million pet cats in 2011, a decrease of 9.4 percent from 81.7 million in 2006. The decline in the total number of pet dogs and cats in the U.S. from 2006 to 2011 is 6.4 percent. continued on page 37 »
